How do you know when something is so hard you can't do anything harder? You can't. It’s like looking up at a cloud deck and trying to guess how far it is to the blue sky.
I don't read a lot of other folks stuff, but I love your words. I drop what I'm doing when I see you share. This makes me almost consider getting on a plane.
I don't think I have ever seen anyone else adapt to gravel from road without a mountain bike background as well as you sir, or near as fast. Keep sharing these words, you are a wonderful inspiration.
Knew after reading Brian Toone’s ride report that I could look forward to reading yours and you came through as always! While your accomplishment hits HIGH on the EPIC scale, especially considering your tight recovery schedule, I do understand a “little” of your recovery process.
Back in 2011, I crashed in an echelon, broke 6 ribs, my clavicle and also had a small lung puncture too. Then 8 weeks after, I did a 12 hr event but admittedly mine was on a basic FLAT & PAVED surface. Now my ride was definitely awful, but no effing way I ever even finish your Iceland ride! Major kudos Rick, you have set an incredibly high bar!
Rick, A wonderful read and encapsulation of the journey, literally and metaphorically, you took to complete this race.
Really happy for you. I strive to take the life lessons you share to heart. You always leave me with lots to reflect on.
That is Awesome. Great story.
Tenacity is your middle name.
That looked like a great but HARD time.
Loved it

Thanks Bo. That means a lot. I appreciate everything you do for gravel riding in Alabama.
I have a great respect for your ability to “recover” and go forward with this race! Enjoyed the write up. Makes me want to do the race one day.
hmm

Congrats - amazing you got hurt right after we saw you in Lex.
And the crash was a week after our son’s wedding, so the timing definitely could have been worse…
